    Hello guys and gals,

I would like to call a vote on adding the word "noob" to the banned words list in the chat filter.
It is nothing more than a word used degradingly in a demeaning or belittling manner.
I, for one, would enjoy never seeing it used again.

I think we have better things to do than police the word 'noob'. If you head on over to facebook and look at the dso feed, you'll find plenty of all-out profanity. The word 'noob' is as mild as aspercreme. I also know a lot of people who use it in a friendly way among friends or even about themselves after a blunder. Shrug it off. You're going to hear it even when you are op. I think you just need to relax a bit and if someone is actually harassing you, block them in your [F]-key social list or report them to support. There's too many things in life to get irked about. This is not one of them.

Noob = Newbie. We all were at one time. Nothing surprising about that. And seriously, we need the new folk or the game would languish. Personally, sometimes I'm the "noob" as I've never been to that particular map and don't know how to handle the boss. Other times, I'm the veteran who gets to show the new kids on the block how it is done.

I think the term is fine and isn't insulting unless you choose to take it that way.

You want to ban the word 'noob' from an online game?

Contrary to popular belief (In Virtual Gaming), the terminologies Newbs and Noobs are not the same thing. Newbies-Newbs are people who are new to the game (beginners). The latter implies people that are beyond new, possibly possessing significant experience of the game yet somehow fails in various measures--a good example would be PVP Skills.

Noob is used to undermine the morale of a Ranger in a Dark Set with a predator having a Field Marshal fame rank loosing to a Regular KotO in a duel.

But I have to say no. It's like rooting the F word out of the English dictionary because its vulgar and offense the minority. Bah.

Regrettably banning the word won't change the offensive behaviour. There will always be those who forget that they didn't play perfectly from the moment they started playing the game (and still don't tbh). Ignore their bad manners and don't let it ruin your play.

You are most correct in your explanation of the term "Noob". It is in no way associated with the word, "Newbie". And really the lack of understanding of that simple fact is the beginning of, prejudice, bigotry as well as biasness in a younger individual and only proves the existence of those same un-desirable qualities, in those that are old enough to know better ... This being just some of the things, I think a game developer should consider, seeing how the individuals who run/develop the games usually have more of a child's attention, than their parents do. So I once again state the fact I believe the term "Noob" should simply be added to the word list that the computer automatically stars out ... It is not like I asked the developers to create a whole new program. I am just implying that the word should be added to an existing program to help improve everyone's on-line gaming experience.

Noob is mostly used by those without legitimate recognition or knowledge to make such a call. It's just another cheap shot by those of limited self-worth.

    EDIT

Don't dignify their name-calling with a response. Just beat the hell out of the at every opportunity, like the rest of the world. :)

What is this? North korea?? I somehow agree, but yeah as someone said it won't change their bahaviour. Some spent a lot of time in their characters, not to forget a lot of money and they don't like when getting owned by some that in their head "shouldn't" be better. Which might be correct *stats-wise*, but not in skill. :) Ignore them and move on best solution, or write back exactly what they write to you, should not take long before they get bored then. :D

Noob is a word children use to say 'damn, you got me'. I mostly reply with 'this n00b pwned you, what does that make you then?'

There used to be a time when we were taught "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me".

Let's say that you get your way and they ban the all time offensive word noob... Then what? Do you think that bad terms will magically stop? Will that stop the children from coming up with another term that you don't like?

If the worst thing that happened to me today was being called a noob by some stranger on the internet, I would count myself lucky.

+1... Well said. You can ban words, but you can't ban ideas - positive or negative ones.

Right on, if there's one thing proven time and again: acceptable descriptive words become offensive over time when they are as applied as an insult to groups or classes. So people:
    1. Come up with a new descriptive
    2. Descriptive starts being used as an insult
    3. People become offended
    4. Go to step one
Options to change process: Stop being offended or stop using it as an insult. Since second option is unlikely due to people's nature there is little choice left except to repeat the process.

  17. O...k.... looks like we have managed to conclusively resolve this high-brow philosophical debate. Well done. Shall we turn to the more trivial matters in life such as how to attain world peace and feed the poor?
